A los 16 años regresó a su pueblo natal y formó parte de una orquesta de baile. Allí comienza su exitosa carrera como maestro y clarinetista que le lleva a ocupar en 1917 la plaza de solista en la Banda del Regimiento 369 en New York. Cuando regresa a Puerto Rico forma parte de la Orquesta Sinfónica, la del Teatro Municipal y el Club Armónico, ocupando la silla de primer clarinete en estas últimas.

En 1940 fue Director de la Banda de Ciegos donde realizó una magnífica tarea. En 1945 fue instructor de la Escuela Libre de Música hasta su retiro en 1955. Pero su retiro no significó que su labor creadora había concluído, todo lo contrario: fue uno de los compositores de Danzas más laureados de los certamenes del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña y del Círculo de Recreo de San Germán, en los cuales participó casi hasta el momento de su fallecimiento. Aunque su género preferido fue la Danza, Duchesne compuso Minuets, Himnos, Marchas, Canciones de Arte, una Zarzuela, una Sinfonía y una Obertura, éstas últimas inéditas. Ha obtenido reconocimientos y premios por sus Danzas y composiciones que datan desde 1928 hasta practicamente el momento de su deceso, como se señala anteriormente. El Instituto de Cultura le otorgó un certificado "por su valiosa contribución a la promoción de los valores de la cultura puertorriqueña en sus múltiples manifestaciones" en 1981; y el 24 de Abril de 1982 fue exaltado en vida a la Galería de la Fama de los Compositores de Danzas Puertorriqueñas del Círculo de Recreo de San Germán, junto a Morel, Tavárez, Mislán, y Quintón.

El Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña realizó una grabación de sus Danzas, interpretadas al piano por Carmelina Figueroa, en la que se incluyen: Josefina gentil, Plegaria por la Patria, Preciosa Irma, No era amor, La Fajardina, Bandera de flores, Divina Mariemma, Así es mi amor, Así te soñé y La quiquiriquí.

Falleció el 22 de febrero de 1986.

Rafael Duchesne was born on May 15, 1890 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. His father was a music teacher and his mother taught at an elementary school. They both died when he was only 10 years old, being sent to the Boys Charity School in Santurce, where he learned music, following his father's footsteps.

By the age of 16 he returned to his hometown and joined a dance band, thus beginning his career as a teacher and soloist which took him to New York in 1917 as a soloist in the 369 Battalion Band. Coming back to Puerto Rico he joined the Symphonic Orchestra, and two other bands where he occupied the first chair as a clarinetist.

In 1940 he became the director of the Orchestra of Blind people. In 1945 he went to teach at the Free School of Music until his retirement in 1955. But his retirement didn't mean that his creativity was over, quite the opposite. He became one of the composer with most winning compositions in the contests sponsored by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and the Círculo de Recreo de San Germán, where he competed almost to his last day. Although his favorite genre was the Puerto Rican danza, Duchesne composed minuets, hyms, marches, art songs, a zarzuela, a symphony and an Overture. He has been awarded prizes and recognitions since 1928 almost to his death, as mentioned before. In 1981 the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture awarded him a certificate "for his valuable contribution in the promotion of the values of Puerto Rican Culture in its multiple manifestations". In 1982 he became the sixth person to be inducted into the Círculo de Recreo de San Germán's Danza Composers Hall of Fame, alongside Morel, Tavárez, Mislán, Quintón and Simón Madera.

The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture sponsored a recording of his danzas, played by Carmelina Figueroa, where the following are included: Josefina gentil (Gentle Josefina), Plegaria por la Patria (Prayer for my country), Preciosa Irma (Beautiful Irma), No era amor (It was not love), La Fajardina (The girl from Fajardo), Bandera de flores (Flower's flag), Divina Mariemma (Divine Mariemma), Así es mi amor (Such is my love), Así te soñé (This is how I dreamed of you), and La quiquiriquí.

He died on February 22, 1986.
